Chapter Eight – Copymaster Tasks
Copymaster Tasks – Chapter Eight
Task 4
John, a blond and young boy, is born in the Savage reservation. His mother is Linda, an unattractive woman, who took care of John on her own, because something had gone wrong with her contraceptives, so she were not able to abort the child. He is an outcast, who is not accepted by the Indians, due to being white and because his mother slept with many men in town, although some of them were in a relationship.
John has always listened to the stories his mother told him about the ‘Other Place’. Linda also taught him to read. As Popé, yet another lover of Linda, had brought some books of Shakespeare, John began reading them. Thus, he can speak English perfectly and can express himself sometimes poetically to show his emotions.
As Bernard and Lenina meet John, they get to know each other. John introduces them to his mother Linda, who tells them about the birth of John and his father, who was called ‘Tomakin’. John does not know his father as in contrast to Bernard, who points out that ‘Tomakin’ is Thomas, the Director. Bernard asks John to come along to London, because Bernard wants to embarrass the Director by approaching with his son. John accepts the offer only when his mother can come along as well.
Task 3
John is keen about discovering the World State, since he has been told many stories that he liked well about the World State by his mother.
Additionally, John is rejected by the inhabitants of the Savage reservation due to being white as well as her mother sleeping with many men in town. This could lead to John leaving his hometown and discovering the World State.
Furthermore, by reason of his verbal skills he has acquired by reading books of Shakespeare, John is able to criticize values of the World State he doesn’t agree with.
As an additional motive of why John is keen about discovering the World State is that he will meet his father eventually by chance.

Characterization of Olivia and the narrator in ‚Heat and Dust‘
The narrator
The narrator is the daughter of Douglas and Tessie Rivers. She travels to India in order to learn what had happened to Olivia as well as to help the poor. One of the first things she does is to purchase Indian clothing, so she tries to adapt to the Indian culture as she arrives.
Later on, she falls in love with Inder Lal, an Indian, at almost the same spot where Olivia and the Nawab become lovers and gets pregnant. As in contrast to Olivia, she does not abort her child. The narrator studies Hindi, since she is very interested in India. Although she wants to step into Olivia’s footsteps, she desperately tries to adapt to the Indian culture.
Olivia
Olivia is the first wife of the narrator’s grandfather. She is a British woman living with Douglas, her husband, in India. She travelled to India due to Douglas’ work.
As she feels bored by idling around alone in the house, she accepts the invitation of the Nawab. After a while, she visits the Nawab more frequently. They fall in love with each other and Olivia gets pregnant by him. Since she does not want anyone to know this, she aborts her child by using Indian curative treatment. Nevertheless, Olivia does not stay with Douglas but with the Nawab, who buys her a house on some mountain, where Olivia lives for the rest of her life.
